Maradona Sues SINA, The9, Claiming Compensation
SHANGHAI, Jun 14, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Soccer star Diego Armando Maradona has sued SINA Corporation (Nasdaq: SINA) and The9 Limited (Nasdaq: NCTY) for using his image and name in their operated online game Winning Goal without authorization and claimed compensation of CNY 20 million.
Earlier, The9 revealed that Maradona agreed to be the image ambassador of the game and had been paid USD 250,000.
On January 24, 2011, the official Web site of Winning Goal posted a media report, saying The9 had inked a representing agreement with Maradona, who was invited by the company's board chairman Zhu Jun, also the investor of Shanghai Shenhua FC.
By far, neither of the involved companies have made reply to the lawsuit. A top executive of SINA in charge of public relations tells reporters that the company has no knowledge about the case and is discommodious to make comments.
The9 points out in a statement that its top management is shocked to hear the lawsuit and is communicating with the broker of Maradona, since the company itself may be also the victim of a fraud by persons close to the soccer star.

Arizona State University to Deploy Vidyo to Enable Virtual Classrooms in Tropical Biodiversity with Smithsonian
Type: News
Vidyo announced that undergraduates and doctoral students from Arizona State University's School of Life Sciences are currently engaged in "face-to-face" interactions with staff scientists from the Smithsonian Institution in Panama, using Vidyo's video communication and collaboration solution.
Through multipoint Vidyo conference exchanges, experts from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) and scientists at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., are sharing real time classroom activities with ASU professors and students. Vidyo's reach and capabilities extend to remote areas in Panama over general purpose IP networks, including the Internet.
"Vidyo's technology and video conferencing system transforms mediated classrooms on campus into real time, research and learning environments," said Robert Page, Jr., dean of the School of Life Sciences. "Students can participate in high quality video interactions with researchers from remote areas, plus collect and share data via the Internet, all at the same time, on their laptop or desktop PCs or Mac. No other video communications solution offers the kind of access, ease-of-use and quality that we're getting via Vidyo."
The virtual classroom program debuted last Fall semester in ASU's "Current Topics in Tropical Biology class. The course features a series of lectures by experts from ASU and STRI in Panama. In addition to the expanded global classroom activities, Smithsonian researchers are working with ASU colleagues and mentoring students on site in Arizona. One goal of the ASU-STRI collaborative is to promote educational opportunities globally; in particular, research and discovery in the areas of biofuels, social structure, sustainability and species diversity.
The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution (STRI) in Panama offers facilities that allow staff scientists, fellows, and visiting scientists to pursue a range of tropical studies, from field studies in sustainability and ecoservices to investigations of molecular and marine sciences and sociobiology. The continuity of the institution's long-term ecological programs, for example on Barro Colorado Island, enables in-depth investigations that attract more than 900 elite scientists, students and visitors a year.
Although long distance virtual education has become more common with increasingly sophisticated software and technology that allows conferences to be accessed via the Internet, what sets Vidyo apart is low cost, mobility - the ability to use it in a field setting - use of a simple desktop interface, and the number and quality of multiple simultaneous connections.
More than 2,500 undergraduates are currently enrolled as life sciences majors in the School of Life Sciences. With 650 faculty, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and staff, the School of Life Sciences provides a spectrum of experiences for undergraduate and graduate students that build on ASU's and Arizona's burgeoning role in biotechnical and biomedical research. The dynamic combination of multidisciplinary approaches in collaboration with on- and off-campus partners propels the School of Life Sciences to international leadership in education, urban sustainability science, neuroscience, cellular and developmental biology, genomics and proteomics, social complexity, biogeochemistry, bioethics, emerging infectious disease, and biodiversity assessment and conservation.
Headquartered in Panama City, Panama, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institution is a unit of the Smithsonian Institution. The institute furthers the understanding of tropical nature and its importance to human welfare, trains students to conduct research in the tropics and promotes conservation by increasing public awareness of the beauty and importance of tropical ecosystems.

FED:No verdict yet in Keli Lane murder trial
SYDNEY, Dec 8 AAP - A Sydney jury will continue its deliberations on Thursday in the
trial of former water polo champion Keli Lane, who is accused of murdering her baby.
The NSW Supreme Court jury of six women and six men retired on Monday morning but have
not yet reached a verdict.
The 35-year-old has pleaded not guilty to murdering two-day old Tegan Lane on September
14, 1996, after they left Auburn hospital.
She also has denied three counts of making a false statement on oath in relation to
documents dealing with her adopting out two other babies.
Lane told police she handed Tegan over to a man she first named as Andrew Morris, then
Andrew Norris, who she said was the infant's father.
She said she'd had a brief and secret affair with him.
But the crown claims he is a fictitious person and that Lane murdered Tegan because
she did not want the responsibility of a child.

St Vincent's Private Hospital spokesman David Faktor said Mr Leckie was no longer in
an induced coma, and his condition had been downgraded from serious.
But he was still in the intensive care unit where he was expected to remain for the
next few days, he said.
"He's what they call extubated, he's got a ventilator in and he's still in ICU," Mr
Faktor told AAP.
"But he's listed as being in a stable condition."
Seven chairman Kerry Stokes said Mr Leckie was in good spirits.
"David's sense of humour is in place," Mr Stokes said in a statement.
Mr Leckie was admitted to hospital on April 11 and doctors have been battling to control
a life-threatening infection that started in a finger he almost severed in an accident

Fed: Poll puts Labor further ahead as PM judged old, dishonest

Fed: Poll puts Labor further ahead as PM judged old, dishonest
CANBERRA, Aug 7 AAP - The latest Newspoll shows federal Labor increasing its commanding
lead over the coalition government as parliament resumes from the winter break.
The poll published in today's The Australian newspaper gives Labor a 56-44 advantage
over the coalition on a two-party preferred basis, a widening of two points from the previous
poll.
The Labor lead increased by the same amount on the primary vote to 48-39 per cent and
preferred prime minister with leader Kevin Rudd ahead of Prime Minister John Howard 44-39.
However, the government could find some vindication in the poll for its controversial
handling of the Mohamed Haneef case, with 49 per cent approving and 36 per cent disapproving.
The latest Newspoll, conducted at the weekend, follows the emergence yesterday of damning
Liberal Party research showing that voters see Mr Howard as old and dishonest.
Prepared six weeks ago by trusted Liberal strategist Mark Textor, the dossier says
Mr Howard's age will be an election issue and one of the major impediments to the coalition
holding office.
It says voters see Mr Rudd, 49, as a more youthful, more caring, more trustworthy version
of the 68-year-old prime minister.
And it suggested fending off the Labor challenge by focusing attention on the state
governments, stressing that the commonwealth was bailing out ineffective and inefficient
states.
Since then, the government has stepped up its attacks on the states, including last
week's unprecedented decision to fund a Tasmanian hospital earmarked for downgrading.
Mr Rudd says the dossier showed Mr Howard had given up governing and was now completely
poll-driven.
But Mr Howard is playing down the document, saying government support had improved
since it was compiled in late June.
Mr Rudd told the Labor caucus yesterday that an election predicted for after the September
APEC summit in Sydney could be held on October 20 at the earliest.
He said Mr Howard might be tempted to extend the poll date to November, but that ran
the risk of making people impatient.
But according to News Ltd newspapers, Howard's battlers, the aspirational mortgagees
credited with dumping Paul Keating for John Howard, have already turned to Mr Rudd.
The Daily Telegraph newspaper, using a second instalment of Textor figures today, has
tracked the mortgagees shift to Labor in Sydney.
It says the charge to Labor is being led by voters aged 35 to 49 - with younger and
first-time voters bringing up the rear.
The polling shows the biggest drift away from the Howard government by voters aged
35 to 49 is higher in NSW than any other state - 18 per cent of them have dumped the Liberals
since 2004.
Meanwhile, today's Newspoll showed that on the issue of Immigration Minister Kevin
Andrews' decision to cancel Dr Haneef's work visa, 70 per cent of coalition voters supported
his handling of the case while 17 per cent disapproved.
Among Labor supporters, 38 per cent supported the way the minister handled the case,
with 51 per cent saying they disapproved.

Fed: Aboriginal leader calls for urgent meeting with PM
An indigenous leader in Tasmania has called on the prime minister to guarantee funding
.. that would prevent scientific tests being conducted on Aboriginal remains in London.
Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre legal director MICHAEL MANSELL's asked JOHN HOWARD for
a meeting to thrash out a financial commitment from the federal government.
The centre's won an interim injunction preventing the Natural History Museum in London
from conducting tests on the remains .. before a full High Court hearing on February 22.
But it'll need up to 300 thousand dollars to pay for the case .. and says the entire
challenge could collapse without cash from the commonwealth.
Mr MANSELL says he's asked Mr HOWARD for a guarantee that the federal government will
cover any costs awarded against them.
The Natural History Museum has agreed to return the remains of 17 indigenous Tasmanians
but not before scientific tests are performed on their bodies.
The remains were removed from burial grounds in Tasmania by colonialists in the early
18-hundreds .. and eventually given to the museum.

Qld: Dr Death notes for cover up, inquiry told
BRISBANE, Aug 18 AAP - The rogue surgeon dubbed Doctor Death had written "untruthful"
notes after operations to cover up botched surgery, a Queensland inquiry has been told.
Bundaberg private surgeon Dr Geoffrey de Lacy told the Morris Inquiry into the employment
of Dr Jayant Patel that he had examined the Indian-trained surgeon's records.
Dr de Lacy said he had seen 150 of Dr Patel's former patients and performed corrective
surgery on at least 100 of them.
"Before I operated on patients I thought they (the records) were slipshod, but now
I have operated on them I believe they are untruthful," Dr de Lacy said.
Dr Patel was director of surgery at Bundaberg Base Hospital in south east Queensland
for two years until fleeing overseas on April 1 this year.
He has since been linked to the deaths of more than 80 Bundaberg hospital patients.
Inquiry head Tony Morris said Dr Patel may have deliberately set out to create a set
of notes that looked comprehensive but in fact were not.
Dr de Lacy agreed. "A lot of it is rubbish," he said.
One of Dr Patel's former patients was a man who had been unable to fully extend his
leg after having a nerve plugged instead of having his hernia repaired, the inquiry was
told.
"This man was effectively a cripple for two years," Mr Morris said.
The man has since recovered after remedial surgery by Dr de Lacy.
The inquiry continues.

NSW: ICAC clears Knowles over whistleblower nurses claims
SYDNEY, April 13 AAP - Former NSW health minister Craig Knowles was today cleared by
the state's corruption watchdog of misconduct allegations related to his dealings with
whistleblower nurses.
The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) investigated claims Mr Knowles
bullied and intimidated five nurses who raised concerns with him about the treatment of
patients at Camden and Campbelltown hospitals in Sydney's south-west.
ICAC Assistant Commissioner John Clarke, QC, found Mr Knowles "did not threaten, intimidate
or attempt to intimidate any person, or engage in any other conduct that could reasonably
be regarded as improper".
During public hearings, Mr Clarke heard evidence Mr Knowles banged his fist and became
angry at four of the nurses when they met with him in 2002.
A senior nurse seconded from Liverpool to Fairfield hospital said she was forced to
return to her old position after she raised concerns about patient care with Mr Knowles
in 2003.
Mr Clarke found there was insufficient evidence to find any person took detrimental
action against the nurse, Giselle Simmons, because of the complaints she made to Mr Knowles.
A Health Care Complaints Commission (HCCC) inquiry in 2003 into the deaths of 19 people
at the Camden and Campbelltown hospitals criticised patient care and management.
Mr Knowles is now the infrastructure, planning, and natural resources minister.

Desc looks to reduce costs.
MEXICO CITY, Mar 21, 2003 (El Economista/Corporate Mexico by Internet Securities, Inc. via COMTEX) -- Industrial companies conglomerate Grupo Desc reported that before the possible reduction on autopart exports to the United States, it would intensify the spending reduction program and look for new clients. Facing a war scenario, Desc will increase marketing programs to try to obtain more contracts to supply European and Asian automobile manufacturers. Desc also reported that the chemical business was depressed before the war, which is why it would continue reducing costs and improving productivity in all production lines. In the face of the possibility that Ford, Chrysler and General Motors decrease their demand of autoparts, the corporation has planned to diversify its portfolio of clients and supply the needs of original-equipment manufacturers, which continue gaining market share despite the uncertainty.Grupo Desc lost 1.03 billion pesos (US$96 million) in 2002 and net income dropped by 10.9% mainly due to the decreases in U.S. and Mexican economic activity, which resulted in production adjustments in automobile manufacturers and postponement of new projects. This article has been translated by Internet Securities, Inc. as a service to its customers. Spirit of Hong Kong Bounds for Buenos Aires to Extend Across Continents Investment Opportunities in Hong Kong.
Business Editors
HONG KONG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 2000
Invest Hong Kong's (InvestHK) entry to the BT Global Challenge International yacht race, Spirit of Hong Kong, will set sail on October 15 from Boston for Buenos Aires, the second port-of-call in the World's Toughest Yacht Race.
The yacht has been in port in Boston since September 28.
While in Boston, Spirit of Hong Kong team received the Isle of Man Award during an awards ceremony hosted by Challenge Business, the race organizer. The marble trophy, given for the fastest 24-hour segment during Leg 1, was awarded to Spirit of Hong Kong for clocking 255.27 miles on September 27.
Leg 2 of the race began after a full week of crew and public events in Boston including several corporate hospitality sails on Spirit of Hong Kong during which time Boston's business leaders learned of investment opportunities in Hong Kong. The sails were hosted by Mr. Stephen Ng, Associate Director-General for InvestHK and accompanied by Mr. Lawrence Tang, Investment Relations Officer for InvestHK.
In addition, Miss Jacqueline Willis, Hong Kong Commissioner, USA, hosted a cocktail reception on October 12 for members of Boston's prominent business community. Attending guests included Sir Chay Blyth, CBE BEM, Founder and Executive Chairman of Challenge Business, with his wife, Lady Blyth, and representatives from Advent International, Bloomberg News, Genuity, Micro Touch Systems, State Street Global Investor Services, Wellington Management and Zoom Telephonics.
Finally, on October 13, the Hong Kong Tourist Association hosted a Water Blessing Ceremony at Rowes Wharf. The ceremony, conducted by a Taoist monk, was to wish the yacht a safe journey as it heads to Buenos Aires.
Mr. Stephen Ng, Associate Director-General of InvestHK, said, "We're thrilled Spirit of Hong Kong clocked the fastest 24-hours segment during the first leg of the race. The Spirit of Hong Kong crew has once again demonstrated its commitment to strive and excel. Their endurance and persistence truly reflects the spirit of the people of Hong Kong and their enthusiasm to succeed. These are just some of the qualities of Hong Kong that InvestHK is communicating to companies it meets throughout its participation in the BT Global Challenge."
Throughout the race, InvestHK, the government agency responsible for attracting foreign investment to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, will be hosting corporate-focused events in order to spread the message that Hong Kong is an ideal location for Asia-Pacific operations or investments.
Mr. Ng added, "Throughout our visit to Boston, InvestHK has met with executives from leading companies in their field, such as Wellington Management and Sapient to discuss the business advantages Hong Kong offers for foreign investors. Hong Kong's economy is now growing at an annual rate that is in excess of 6%. Hong Kong has a population of nearly seven million and is the world's highest throughput container port and air-freight port. Densities of fibre optic network, mobile telephone and Internet users in Hong Kong are also amongst the highest in the Asia Pacific region. Hong Kong's tax system is the most business-friendly in the world, where firms pay only 16% profits tax, while individuals pay no more that 15% in salaries tax, and often effectively less. These are just some of the reasons why Hong Kong is an ideal location for Asia-Pacific investment."
