Qld: Scrapyard fire under control
BRISBANE, Aug 27 AAP - A fire that engulfed a Brisbane scrap metal yard in east Brisbane
is under control but is expected to burn well into the night.
About 30 fire fighters are battling the blaze at the Smorgons Steel yard at Wynnum
Court, Hemmant.
The fire at the yard containing car bodies broke out shortly after 4pm and fire crews
brought in heavy machinery as a huge pall of smoke was visible from much of the city.
Police have urged motorists to avoid nearby Lytton Road.
A Queensland Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said the blaze was under control and
did not pose a threat to other buildings on the property.
She said damping it down was time consuming and she did not expect the blaze to be
extinguished for several hours.
