NSW: Irish backpacker killed in head on collision

An Australian backpacking trip has ended in tragedy for two Irish friends who were
involved in a head-on crash in Sydney today.

One of the backpackers was killed instantly, the other taken to hospital in a serious
condition where he is undergoing surgery.

The tourists were travelling east bound on busy Parramatta Road at Concord in Sydney's
west when they tried to change lanes and clipped the side of a private bus.

That sent their Western Australia registered van across the median strip and into the
path of a State Transit bus travelling in the opposite direction.

An ambulance spokeswoman says the impact crushed the van, killing one of the backpackers
and trapping the other for about an hour.

Both tourists are aged 26.

The State Transit bus had just left the Concord bus depot and had no passengers on board.

The accident occurred shortly before 8am (AEDT).
