Qld: Renewed push to review trading hours
The National Competition Council's criticism of Queensland's trading hours has renewed
a push by large retailers to lift restrictions.
Competition council president GRAEME SAMUEL has called for states to give up their
vested interests and deregulate trading hours.
Mr SAMUEL says higher levels of trade and employment have been boosted after deregulation.
Queensland Sunday trading is only allowed in small businesses or some major retailers
which operate in tourist areas such as the Gold and Sunshine coasts, Cairns, Whitsundays
and Brisbane's CBD.
Special adviser to the Shopping Council ANNA BOOTH says people want the chance to shop
on Sundays and the government should not stop them.
But any move to lift Sunday trading restrictions is expected to be greeted by fierce
opposition from small retailers.
